Respondus Test Creator

Respondus 4.0 Test Creator can help you create an assessment with many questions more quickly by allowing you to bypass cutting and pasting test questions, answer choices, and feedback from a Word document or Excel spreadsheet.

For example, you would write the following question on a Word document:

3) Who determined the exact speed of light?

~ Yes. Albert Michelson won the Nobel Prize for Physics for determining the exact speed of light.

@ No. Albert Michelson won the Nobel Prize for Physics for determining the exact speed of light.

a. Albert Einstein
*b. Albert Michelson
c. Thomas Edison
d. Guglielmo Marconi

And after importing via Respondus Test Creator, this question would look like this in a regular Blackboard assessment:

einstein_question

This works because Respondus uses what it calls a Standard Format, which defines how you would insert the question, answer choices, feedback for various options, and even images. Please read more about the standard format at this website.

Note that Respondus is a Windows-only program and requires a few steps for installation. The video below will show you how to download and install Respondus and connect to Blackboard so that your assessments can be uploaded there.

The video below will show you how to download Respondus, install, upload a word formatted question file, and configure for Northeastern University’s Blackboard.

Here is Respondus’s documentation on creating formatted questions.

If you don’t have a Windows machine or you would rather not download Respondus Test Creator, Blackboard itself will allow you to create an import an excel spreadsheet. Read about this process and watch a video on Blackboard’s help site. Here is a sample CSV file and instructions for use courtesy of Sharon Huston, North Lake College.
